The Cottage

This is the west wing of a superb 1923 house in the style of Lutyens with outstanding sea views and its own entrance.  When West Wing Cottage is rented the owners will not be in residence so guests can make use of the large sweeping lawns that overlook sparkling Tor Bay, out past Berry Head and to the open sea beyond. Wake in the morning to a spectacular sunrise over the waters of the bay and  sit  on the terrace in the evening in the glow of a West Country sunset.

Approach this direct seafront property up the private driveway bordered with a fine collection of exotic plants and trees, including some of the famous Torbay palm trees.  Through the ceramic tiled entrance way on the left of the cottage find the galley style kitchen, with its pale seafoam units accented with hand crafted oak trim, crisp white tiles and plenty of storage. Clever use has been made of the space to include a stainless steel double oven, integral microwave and dishwasher, along with a sleek ceramic hob.  The breakfast bar is perfect for snacks and casual dining.  Off the kitchen, the walk in larder (or as they used to say in the 1920s, the pantry) contains a refrigerator and a freezer, a tall pull-out larder plus storage and preparation area.  There is a large American style washing machine and matching tumble dryer.

The open-plan living area is light and airy with tall ceilings and French doors opening out onto a flagstone terrace and steps leading down onto the lawns.  It features a dining table for four, a top quality hugely comfortable sofa and armchairs from which to enjoy the views overlooking the garden. With luxury furnishing including heirloom style furniture and a grandfather clock, every comfort has been considered. The living room is the ideal place to sit down with a good book, enjoy a movie on the 32" flat-screen TV/DVD or listen to some favourite music on the sound system. With the French doors flung open and the sound of the sea drifting in, you will feel instantly relaxed in your exclusive holiday hideaway. Underfloor heating throughout the ground floor keeps you warm and toasty in the cooler months.

At the far end of the kitchen is a wrought iron spiral stairway, with 3" thick oak treads crafted with oak harvested from the owners private estate in Carmarthenshire, leading to the first floor landing. Upstairs, huge antique cast iron radiators rescued from the big house allow for plenty of warmth.  To the left is the first double bedroom, featuring fantastic views across the gardens and out to sea. Take morning tea on the Juliet balcony outside the French windows, which flood wonderful natural light into the room.

The bedroom benefits from a 5 ft wide queen sized bed, topped by a supremely comfortable mattress.  With 400 thread count cotton sateen luxury linens and sumptuous pillows, it all but guarantees you a perfect night’s sleep. This room features a Bishopsgate sleigh bed, a traditional dresser and has all the storage room you could need including a large walk-in closet. A large antique style mirror in the centre of the room, adds to the light and airy atmosphere.

The ensuite bathroom features walk-in shower, heritage fittings including Victorian style high cistern toilet, bidet and basin, and a large double ended clawfoot bathtub for 2 with antique fittings. The bathroom is warm and beautifully lit by a skylight. If you get into the bath with a good book, you might not want to get out for a while.

The second double bedroom to the front of the house offers spacious accommodation, a view of Torquay marina to the right of the leaded windows and something rather unique. As you walk into the entrance hall, to your right is a half slipper clawfoot bath set in its own little vestibule, hidden by a curtain. With a flat-screen TV above and soft mood lighting, it is the perfect place to relax and watch a favourite movie or television programme.

In the room itself, a large window gives the room a light and airy feel. The large super-king sized 6 ft wide poster bed, again featuring luxury linens and comfy pillows, dominates but leaves plenty of space to enjoy your privacy. An oak window seat offers another comfortable spot to sit and enjoy the views back towards Torquay's eclectic collection of Edwardian and Victorian mansions and the hills beyond. It's great spot to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy a novel by one of Torquay's most famous earlier residents, Agatha Christie.

The impressive ensuite bathroom features a huge walk-in pan head shower and is again finished with luxury fittings and heritage high level toilet, bidet and basin.

The real magic of this holiday cottage is found outside, on the expansive, landscaped lawns of the magnificent garden. Guests can enjoy full use of all the open space and can enjoy the wonderful views from their private terrace outside the French doors leading from the living area.

A path leads down to the bottom of the garden and there are steps leading to the main terrace from where you can enjoy the incredible outlook over Tor Bay. Stroll across the manicured lawn between established flower beds and down the semi-circular steps to the lower lawn. Look south to Paignton and its traditional pier jutting out from the long sandy beach and north to Torquay, its bright harbour lights twinkling in the distance as the yachts bob in the harbour.

Guests are also free to make use of the private access to the waters edge below, excellent for fishing, rock-pooling or just sunbathing and enjoying the environment in complete privacy. Take care as you descend the steps leading down to the water, or you could just stop halfway and enjoy a drink on the lookout built into the rocks. Summer weekends often see a regatta, filling the waters with drifting white sails, you may glimpse dolphins or if you are really lucky a seal.

This is a truly magical open space, unique in Torquay holiday accommodation. This brand-new property is certain to become a real favourite with visitors to the area so don’t delay, book your stay today.
